ABOUT THIS ARTIST
You could be tempted to think these prints were only for the childrens bedroom, and you couldn't be more wrong. The quality and originality of each print makes the STRID series of drawings a collectors item, bringing colour and sophistication to any wall.
Jakob Martin Strid is a hugely popular cartoonist born in 1972 in Denmark. From the outset Strid – as he is commonly known – has worked as a cartoonist and had his break-through with the general public, when he was syndicated in a daily strip entitled ‘Strid’ in the national newspaper Politiken.
The strip’s main character’s diminutive body and large head with spiky hair is a cartoon version of himself. His satirical talent quickly ensured Strid a reputation as a controversial cartoonist.
Strid’s anti-authoritarian, humorous, and poetic blend were reflected in his children’s books, though in a form that was less abrasive. Here his political satire was transformed in to an anarchistic, humorous tale with great sympathy for strangers and the outsiders.
With the picture book Little Frog (2005), Jakob Martin Strid won a picture book competition sponsored by the largest Danish publishing house, Gyldendal. The book went on to win the BØFA (a children’s librarians’ group) Cultural Honorary Award.
